Classes on as normal - despite the snow!

Developed and established in Finland over 30 years ago by the Szilvay brothers,
Colourstrings teaching is based on the principles devised by the 20th century composer and educator
Zoltan Kodaly and Swiss musician and educator Émile Jaques-Dalcroze, among others.
Kodaly firmly believed that fundamentally all human beings are born musical,
and with the right teaching approach this natural ability can be harnessed and developed.
He also thought it was never too early to start learning music and is quoted as saying,
"music education should begin nine months before the birth of the mothers".
Therefore, Colourstrings Music Kindergarten teachers are highly trained music specialists
who have been taught to work with very young children.

Using the spoken and unaccompanied singing voice and simple percussion instruments,
the children are exposed from the outset to musical concepts such as pulse (beat),
rhythm, tempo (fast/slow), pitch (high/low) and dynamics (loud/quiet).
Teaching is well-structured but at the same time enjoyable, with the classes being an interactive group experience
offering children quality time with their parents or carers and interaction with other children in a fun environment,
whilst all the while instilling sound musical foundations.
Children can be taught music kindergarten from newborn up to the age of 8 years.
By then they can expect to be able to read and write simple notation and understand and use solfa (do-re-mi).
The ultimate aim, if they continue with their Colourstrings education,
is to develop their 'inner ear' – the ability to hear in their head what they see on the page and to see what they hear.
Also, they will have developed a good singing voice, which Kodaly considered essential before starting to learn an instrument.
